I'm still here
After 9 years in the Air Force, Kevin has decided to leave active duty in May and pursue some of his other dreams. He wanted to cross-train into a flight crew position (flight engineer or loadmaster), but the AF wouldn't give him that option......he was stuck as a jet mechanic if he stayed there......worse than that, he went from being on the flight line in Alaska where all the action was to handing out tools at the base in New Mexico. This has been a long 7 months for him in New Mexico, so you might say he can't wait to get out. I will never understand how the military can take someone like Kevin, who is a great mechanic, loves his job and puts his all into it, and stick him in the support section handing out tools......what a waste!!! But don't get me started on that kind of stupidity.
He will still be in the military, though. He has just decided to transfer to the AF Reserve. He could have cross-trained in doing that, but the closest reserve base offering the position he wanted was in Colorado and that would have been a long drive for weekend duty once a month. So he's going to serve a year in Oklahoma, he thinks, then look at cross-training again, hopefully at a base closer to home. To say he is excited about the possibilities is putting it mildly. He has even talked about trying for Warrant Officer in the National Guard so he can get into helicopters......yikes!!! After all the helicopter crashes in Iraq lately, that sure makes a mother catch her breath. But what can I say, I'm proud of all my boys and constantly pray that their dreams will come true......somehow......some way......no matter what those dreams may be. But that's just what moms do...... military moms included...... :)
